Stop 1: Udupi and Malpe
Udupi is best known for the Sri Krishna Matha, one of the most important pilgrimage centres in South India. Plan time for darshan and a traditional Udupi meal, since the town gave its name to a whole style of vegetarian cooking.
Just outside the town, Malpe beach is a good place to stretch your legs. Boats to St. Mary's Island, known for its unusual rock formations, run from Malpe in season. Sea trips generally stop during the monsoon, so check before you plan around them.
Stop 2: Kundapura and Maravanthe
North of Udupi, the highway reaches Kundapura and then the Maravanthe stretch, where the road runs with the Arabian Sea on one side and a river on the other. It is one of the most photographed parts of the drive. Ask your driver to pull over at a safe spot so you can enjoy the view.
The road inland to Kollur Mookambika leaves the coast from this part of the route, if you want to add a temple visit.
Stop 3: Murudeshwar
Murudeshwar is famous for its towering Shiva statue and tall Raja Gopura, set on a small headland surrounded by the sea on three sides. Visit the temple, walk out to the statue and spend some time on the beach.
Murudeshwar is also the jumping off point for trips to Netrani Island, a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkelling. These trips depend on sea conditions and season, so confirm with an operator in advance.
Tip: Murudeshwar is lovely around sunset, when the statue lights up against the sky. If you are staying overnight nearby, plan to be there in the evening.
Stop 4: Gokarna
Gokarna combines a sacred temple town with some of the best beaches on the Karnataka coast. The Mahabaleshwar temple is an ancient pilgrimage site, while beaches like Kudle and Om Beach attract travellers looking for a quieter coastal break.
The town streets around the temple are narrow, so parts of your visit will be on foot. Some beaches are reached by walking trails or boats, so carry comfortable footwear.
How many days should you plan?
Two days is a comfortable minimum. Day one can cover Udupi, Maravanthe and Murudeshwar, with Gokarna on day two.
Three days gives you time for Malpe or St. Mary's Island, a relaxed evening at Murudeshwar and a full day at the Gokarna beaches.
